Why Does My Power Keep Going Out? Safe Diagnosis

If the whole street loses power, the cause is probably on the utility system. If only one room, one circuit or your house is affected, the problem may be a tripped protective device, overloaded circuit, damaged service connection or fault inside the property.

Repeated outages, flickering, burning odor, buzzing or power that cuts out when an appliance starts need prompt attention. Do not keep resetting a breaker or touching a wet or damaged panel.

First determine the scope

  1. Check whether neighbors and streetlights are also out.
  2. Look at the utility’s outage map or report line.
  3. Check whether only one circuit, part of the house or the entire property is affected.
  4. Note any breaker, GFCI or surge-protection indicator that changed.
  5. Record what was running when power failed.

If only part of the home has power, lights become unusually bright or dim, or 240-volt appliances behave abnormally, call the utility and an electrician. A lost service conductor or neutral can damage equipment and create a fire or shock hazard.

Common utility-side causes

  • Storm, wind, ice, wildfire or flooding damage
  • Tree contact, animals or vehicle impact
  • Failed transformer, cable, switch or substation equipment
  • Planned maintenance or public-safety shutoff
  • Protective equipment operating after a fault
  • Supply shortage or emergency load reduction

The utility controls restoration on its side of the service point. Report hazards such as downed lines, damaged meters, arcing or smoke and keep everyone away.

Common problems inside the property

  • An overloaded branch circuit
  • A short circuit or ground fault
  • A failing appliance, cord, receptacle or breaker
  • A loose connection in the panel or service equipment
  • Moisture in outdoor or basement electrical equipment
  • An undersized or damaged service for the current load

A circuit that trips again after loads are unplugged needs diagnosis. Do not replace a breaker with a larger rating or bypass a GFCI.

What you can do safely

  • Unplug sensitive electronics and large loads.
  • Keep refrigerators and freezers closed.
  • Reset a breaker once only if the panel is dry, undamaged and safe to access.
  • Press RESET on a GFCI only after removing the suspected load and checking for moisture.
  • Use flashlights rather than candles.
  • Follow the utility’s restoration updates.

If medical equipment depends on electricity, use the documented backup plan and move to a powered location when necessary.

When to call an electrician

Call promptly for recurring trips, hot outlets, scorch marks, buzzing, a burning smell, visible sparks, partial-house outages or voltage that rises and falls. Call emergency services for fire, smoke or an immediate electrical hazard.

Do not remove a panel cover or work on service conductors. Parts of the service equipment can remain energized even when the main breaker is off.
