Do not run a generator without its air filter. Unfiltered dust can score the cylinder, contaminate the oil and accelerate wear, while debris entering the intake can cause immediate damage.
A missing filter can also change the air-fuel mixture and allow flame or fuel mist to escape the intake during a fault. Install the correct, undamaged filter and cover before starting the engine.
What the air filter protects
The filter removes abrasive dust before combustion air reaches the carburetor or throttle body. Fine dirt that passes into the engine can wear piston rings, cylinder walls and valve surfaces.
The housing and cover also control the intake path and help keep water, debris and loose material away from the engine.
Can you run briefly without it?
Only if a model-specific service procedure directs a trained technician to do so for diagnosis. It is not a normal operating method and should never be used under load or in dusty conditions.
If the generator will not run with the filter installed, the answer is to clean or replace the correct filter and diagnose the mixture or fuel restriction. Removing the filter is not a repair.
How to inspect and service the filter
- Shut the generator down, disconnect loads and let it cool.
- Remove the cover without dropping dirt into the intake.
- Check the element for heavy dust, oil, tears and failed seals.
- Clean only by the method allowed for that filter type.
- Replace any damaged element with the specified part.
- Clean the housing and reinstall the cover securely.
Paper elements, foam elements and dual-stage filters are serviced differently. Do not wash a paper element or oil a dry filter unless the manual instructs you to.
If oil or fuel is in the air box
Oil can enter after the generator is tilted, the crankcase is overfilled or the breather system is restricted. Fuel may indicate flooding, a stuck carburetor float or another fuel-system fault.
Do not start the generator if liquid fuel is leaking from the intake. Close the fuel valve, move away from ignition sources and have the fault corrected.

The air filter is inexpensive protection for the engine. Run the generator only with the correct filter and cover installed, and service the filter more often in dusty conditions.
