Propane runtime is a fuel-capacity calculation, not a fixed number. Divide the usable propane in the tank by the generator’s consumption at the expected load, then allow for reserve, cold-weather vaporization and any other appliances sharing the supply.
Use the consumption table for the exact generator model. A “20kW generator” can have different half-load and full-load fuel use depending on engine, fuel system and rating.

Propane generator runtime formula
Estimated runtime in hours = usable propane in gallons ÷ consumption in gallons per hour
If a generator consumes 3.56 gallons per hour at full load, 100 usable gallons gives a simple estimate of about 28 hours. At 2.39 gallons per hour, the same quantity gives about 42 hours.
Those figures use one current Generac 20kW specification as an example. They are not universal, and real load changes throughout an outage.
Why tank size does not guarantee runtime
- Tanks are not filled to 100% of their water capacity.
- A reserve may be required for other appliances or delivery planning.
- Cold weather reduces the tank’s ability to vaporize propane.
- A small tank may not maintain pressure at high generator demand.
- Long or undersized pipe and the wrong regulator can starve the engine.
A propane supplier should confirm tank capacity and vaporization at the lowest expected temperature. The generator installer should size regulators and pipe for full-load demand plus other connected appliances.
Portable cylinder versus bulk tank
A portable dual-fuel generator may run from a cylinder only when the generator manual approves that cylinder size and regulator arrangement. Larger loads and cold conditions can exceed a small cylinder’s vaporization rate before the liquid propane is gone.
Home standby generators normally use a bulk tank or utility natural gas. Do not improvise adapters, combine cylinders with unapproved manifolds or bypass the supplied regulator.
Can a propane generator run continuously?
Only within its duty rating, fuel supply and maintenance schedule. Runtime before refueling is not the same as allowable continuous operating time.
Generac’s current guidance for air-cooled home standby units approaching 24 hours of continuous operation requires a controlled shutdown and maintenance checks. Follow the manual for oil checks, cooling time and service intervals.
Plan fuel for an outage
- List essential loads and estimate average generator load.
- Find the model’s half-load and full-load propane consumption.
- Confirm usable tank inventory and required reserve.
- Check cold-weather vaporization and full-load regulator capacity.
- Plan delivery access, maintenance shutdowns and fuel for other appliances.
Reducing unnecessary electric heat, water heating, pool equipment and EV charging can extend propane runtime substantially.
Convert cylinder pounds to usable gallons
Portable propane cylinders are commonly labeled by the pounds of propane they hold, while generator consumption is often listed in gallons per hour. The U.S. Energy Information Administration uses a conversion factor of about 4.2 pounds per gallon. Divide the cylinder rating by 4.2 to estimate gallons.
A 20-pound cylinder therefore holds about 4.8 gallons when properly filled. At 0.5 gallon per hour, the simple calculation is about 9.5 hours. Plan for less because load varies, some reserve is prudent and a small cylinder may lose vaporization capacity in cold weather before it is empty. A 100-pound cylinder holds roughly 23.8 gallons, but use it only when the generator manual and regulator arrangement approve that cylinder size.
Bulk tank labels work differently. Ask the supplier for the current usable gallons rather than multiplying the tank nameplate capacity. See the EIA propane conversion factor.
