The label “cooled seats” does not guarantee refrigerated air. In many vehicles, it describes the same fan-based system sold elsewhere as ventilated seats.
Ventilated seats move cabin air through perforated upholstery. True active-cooling systems chill or thermally condition the air before it reaches the seat.

How ventilated seats work
Small fans in the seat cushion, backrest or both pull or push cabin air through ducts and perforations in the upholstery. The airflow removes heat and moisture trapped between the occupant and the seat.
The system does not usually contain its own refrigeration circuit. It feels more effective after the vehicle’s air conditioning cools the cabin. Hyundai’s 2026 owner guidance, for example, recommends using seat ventilation with the air conditioning and says the temperature change may take 3 to 5 minutes.
Some designs draw air away from the occupant while others blow air toward the surface. Both are ventilation if the air itself is not actively cooled.
How actively cooled seats work
A true climate-controlled seat conditions the air before distributing it. One common design uses a thermoelectric device, sometimes called a Peltier module, as a compact heat pump. Other systems may route air influenced by the vehicle’s HVAC system.
Actively cooled seats can create a more noticeable temperature drop, especially before the cabin has fully cooled. They also add components, power demand and potential repair cost.
Marketing terms are inconsistent. “Cooled,” “air conditioned,” “climate controlled” and “ventilated” may describe different hardware across brands and model years.

How to verify what a vehicle has
Check the owner’s manual and parts description for the exact model year and trim. Look for terms such as fan, cabin air, thermoelectric device, climate-controlled seat or conditioned air.
Do not rely on the button icon or dealer listing alone. Test both the cushion and backrest, because some systems ventilate only one area. Try every setting with the cabin warm, then again after the air conditioning has been running.
Also check whether the feature is fitted to both front seats, rear seats or only the driver’s seat, and whether it can operate automatically with the climate controls.
Comfort, noise and energy use
Ventilated seats are designed to keep the contact surface drier rather than make it cold. They can reduce the need for very low cabin settings, but the comfort gain depends on clothing, upholstery and airflow.
Fan noise is usually modest and increases on the highest setting. Active cooling generally uses more electricity than ventilation, but both are small loads compared with the vehicle’s main air-conditioning compressor.
In an electric vehicle, seat ventilation may support comfort with less cabin cooling, but the range effect depends on the total climate strategy and conditions. Do not expect a fixed mileage gain.
Maintenance and common problems
- Keep bags, papers and other material away from air intakes under the seat.
- Do not fit an unapproved seat cover that blocks perforations.
- Clean the upholstery using the method in the owner’s manual.
- Wipe spills promptly and let the seat dry before operating ventilation.
- Check whether weak airflow affects one zone, one seat or every seat.
A blocked intake, clogged perforations, failed fan, damaged duct, fuse or control fault can reduce airflow. Clicking or scraping often points to debris or a fan problem.
Are aftermarket cooled seats worth it?
Aftermarket ventilated cushions are simple but can shift, obstruct controls or provide uneven airflow. An integrated retrofit requires upholstery work, wiring and space for fans and ducts.
Seats may contain side airbags, occupant-detection sensors, heaters and powered mechanisms. Cutting foam, changing trim or adding wiring can interfere with safety systems. Use a specialist who can document compatibility with the specific vehicle.
Bottom line: ventilated seats use airflow to reduce heat and moisture. Actively cooled seats condition that air, but vehicle makers do not use the labels consistently. Verify the hardware and test the feature before paying for it.
