Most geared wind turbines use oil, but the oil lubricates the drivetrain. It does not make the blades turn.
Wind creates aerodynamic lift on the blades. The rotor then transfers torque to a generator through either a gearbox or a direct-drive system.

Where a wind turbine uses oil and grease
A conventional geared turbine has a gearbox between the low-speed rotor shaft and the generator. Gear oil forms a protective film between heavily loaded gears and bearings, carries heat away and helps remove wear particles through the filtration system.
Other components may use separate lubricants or hydraulic fluids, including the main bearing, pitch drives, yaw drives, brakes and service crane. Grease is common in bearings and open gears. The specified fluids are not interchangeable.
The amount varies sharply by turbine design and capacity. A project-specific Department of Energy spill plan, for example, listed 140 gallons in the main gearbox of one turbine model, plus separate fluids elsewhere. That is an example, not a universal quantity.
How oil supports reliability
Wind-turbine drivetrains operate under changing speed, load and temperature. The lubricant needs the viscosity, additive package and material compatibility specified by the turbine and gearbox manufacturers.
Contamination, water, oxidation and metal particles can reduce bearing and gear life. NREL research highlights filtration, oil sampling, debris monitoring and condition monitoring as tools for finding deterioration before it becomes a major failure.
Operators should never choose a lubricant by viscosity alone. Mixing products can cause additive incompatibility, foaming or seal problems.
How often wind-turbine oil is changed
There is no single industry-wide interval. The turbine’s maintenance manual sets the baseline, while oil analysis and operating conditions may support condition-based changes.
A typical service program may include:
- Checking oil level, pressure, temperature and leaks.
- Inspecting filters and analysing oil for particles, moisture and degradation.
- Replacing filters or cleaning offline filtration equipment.
- Changing lubricant at the manufacturer’s interval or when condition data requires it.
Extending an interval without oil analysis can turn a relatively small maintenance saving into an expensive gearbox repair.
Do direct-drive wind turbines use oil?
A direct-drive turbine connects the rotor to a low-speed generator without a main gearbox. That removes the large gearbox oil circuit and reduces the number of moving drivetrain parts.
It does not make the turbine lubricant-free. Main bearings, pitch systems, yaw systems and other mechanical components may still require grease, oil or hydraulic fluid. Maintenance depends on the exact architecture.
Can wind turbines leak oil?
Leaks can occur at seals, hoses, filters, fittings and cooling circuits. Turbines therefore use alarms, inspections and containment features to find and control fluid loss.
Any spill should be handled under the site’s prevention and response plan. The practical comparison is not whether a turbine uses oil, but how much, where it is contained and how reliably it is monitored over the equipment’s service life.
Bottom line: geared wind turbines use oil because high-load gears and bearings need lubrication. Direct-drive designs remove the main gearbox but still have components that require lubricants.
